Getting started
How to view your zoetrope
To see a zoetrope animate, you need to view it at the right frame rate. There are two ways to do this: through a camera or with a strobe light.
Zoetrope Viewer
Camera or strobe. It’s all in the app.
We’ve made both methods simple with Zoetrope Viewer, our free app for iPhone and Android.
Camera mode
Film and record
the animation
Point your phone at the spinning record and watch the animation come to life on screen.
The app is already set to the correct frame rate, with simple shutter and brightness controls to help you get a clear image.
Record your zoetrope, share your videos, and keep everything in your in-app library.
Strobe mode
See it with
your own eyes
Use your phone’s torch to see the animation directly, without looking through a camera.
The app flashes the light at the correct frequency for the zoetrope effect. For the best results, dim the surrounding lights and point your phone towards the spinning record.
Three simple steps
Play your record
Set your turntable to the speed specified for your design.
Open Zoetrope Viewer
Choose Camera to view and record or Strobe to see the animation directly.
Watch it animate
That’s it. Record it, share it, or just enjoy the animation.

Viewing without the app
You don’t need our app to see the animation. You can also use your phone’s camera settings or a strobe light.
Film with your phone
Speed
Play the record or slipmat at the speed specified for your design, indicated on the packaging.
Frame rate
Set your phone to record at 30 FPS. Most phones do this by default.
Shutter speed and light
If the design looks blurry, your shutter speed is too slow. Film in bright conditions where possible. More light means a faster shutter speed and a sharper image.
Use a strobe light
Speed
Play the record or slipmat at the speed specified for your design, indicated on the packaging.
Strobe light
Set your strobe light to 30 Hz and shine it at the spinning record. Dim the surrounding lights for the best results.
